“R6.00 for a sperm” is how one of South Africa’s top veterinarians described it, as a straw of semen from a top South African bull sold for R65 000 at the Wagyu’s “Uit de Fles” auction at the Country Club in Parys on 10 August. A limited amount of top semen and embryos exchanged hands.
The first lot on sale was three straws of semen from the bull, Midnight. This bull is a polled purebred bull with both good marbling and growth. The bull was recently purchased by Johan Strydom from Prime Wagyu in Aliwal North for R1,85 million, from Australia. The buyer for the three straws was Johan van der Westhuizen.
Another highlight was the Sumo Michifuko F154 semen at R52 000 each. The seller was Johan de Vos and Dr. Sandy Bruins of Stella Wagyu. The buyers were Johan van der Westhuizen, James Schnetler and Michiel Wessels of Beyond Beef.
The total turnover for 197 lots was R1,70 million. The 56 embryos sold for R631 500, an average of R11 276. The 141 semen straws sold for an average R7 072 per straw.
Commercial producers can obtain semen from embryo and AI stations for between R100 and R500 per straw.
