The wool is flying at schools across Bloemfontein this week as children are introduced to the sport of sheep shearing and learn more about the versatility of wool.

This is as the National Wool Growers Association, the NWGA, and Bloem Show take hands to raise awareness ahead of the National Sheep Shearing Championships taking place during the show in April.

The girls at Oranje Girl’s Primary School cheered and shouted as blade shearer Samuel Nkomoyi and machine shearer Themba Khoza, who has his Protea colours for sheep shearing, went head to head.

Grade 2 learner, Lienca Ferreira, whose father is also a farmer, said she learnt a lot about wool during the presentation by NWGA Manager of Sheep Shearing, Izak Klopper. This included things like the fire retarding properties of wool. “He told us if you are wearing a wool jersey and are caught in a fire the wool will still be ok.”
