Summary for Mohair Sale B08/09

The first auction of the year basically kicked off where it ended last season. The sales of especially adult mohair were very good on the first auction of the season. The Rand weakened by 3,07% and is currently trading at R7-72. The average market indicator was 0,5% lower and currently stands at R85-90.

The demand for especially long, fine adult mohair was very good and prices improved by 1% and are currently trading at an average of R83-20. Although the price of strong adult mohair was 2% lower, the price levels remain very satisfactory at R83-63. The price is being driven upwards mainly by the low stock levels world-wide as well as the direct export of adult mohair to China.

The increase of 6% in the average price of young goat hair was very gratifying. The prices of young goat hair are being forced upwards by the good showing of adult mohair and are currently trading at an average of R93-47.

With the low volumes of kid mohair on offer it is not possible to make a meaningful comparison. The offering was characterised by short summer kid mohair as well as leftovers of winter kid mohair from the previous season. The largest buyer on the day was Standard Wool SA.
